As Mubarak Cancels Trip to Kampala

Gordon Brown has used his first major speech since leaving office to say the future growth of the world economy is reliant upon the development of Africa.

Speaking in Kampala, the Ugandan capital, the former UK prime minister said he wanted to see the continent achieve its full potential.

Mr Brown also made light of losing the British general election in May.

He said he was someone who "spent some time as a politician before becoming a community organizer".

Mr Brown contrasted himself with President Barack Obama "who spent some time as a community organizer before becoming a politician".

Dutch company found guilty for toxic waste dumping In Africa PDF Print E-mail

A Dutch court has found multinational company Trafigura guilty of illegally exporting toxic waste from the Dutch port of Amsterdam and concealing the nature of the cargo.

In 2006, Trafigura transported waste which is alleged to have been involved in the injury of thousands of people in Ivory Coast.

Trafigura denied any wrongdoing.

The firm was fined 1m euros (£836,894) for its ship, the Probo Koala, transiting Amsterdam with its cargo.

The ship then went on to unload its cargo in Ivory Coast.

Trafigura employee Naeem Ahmed, who was involved in the ship's operation in Amsterdam, was fined 25,000 euros and the captain of the Probo Koala, 46-year-old Sergiy Chertov, was sentenced to a five-year suspended jail term.

Uganda Police estimates 60 dead

Scores of people were feared drowned Wednesday after a ferry capsized on Lake Victoria, Ugandan police said.

"We've got information that a boat capsized there at dawn today. Onlookers are telling us that the figure of those on board was around 60," Kampala police spokesman Idi Ssenkumbi told the media.

"The police marine unit is on the scene. So far, we have rescued three people alive but we're not sure yet how many have been killed," he added.

The Liechtenstein Foundation for State Governance (LFSG) and the NEPAD Planning and Coordinating Agency (NEPAD Agency), the technical body of the African Union, signed a comprehensive cooperation agreement for a significant Africa-wide capacity development and reform initiative over the next six years. The ceremony was held at Vaduz Castle.

US Court Allows Nigerian Wrongful Death Case Against Pfizer PDF Print E-mail

The US Supreme Court has given Nigerian families the green light to sue the drug company Pfizer over the use of a new antibiotic on their children. It rejected the firm's appeal against a ruling allowing lawsuits to proceed.

The families say Pfizer did not get their proper consent to test the antibiotic Trovan on 200 sick children during a meningitis outbreak in 1996. Eleven children died and others were blinded, paralyzed or brain-damaged. Pfizer denies all allegations.

The company says the children who took the oral drug had a better survival rate than those who did not.

The meningitis epidemic killed 12,000 children in Nigeria over six months.
